Moving Permit Scope

Permit Scope

Los Angeles handles moving-related street use through separate controls rather than one universal household moving permit. LADOT Temporary No Parking Signs address temporary curb clearance; separate parking permits can apply in posted parking districts, and a Bureau of Engineering or Bureau of Street Services permit is required when a move closes a traffic lane or obstructs the public right-of-way.

Moving Equipment Covered

The moving-related rules can affect moving trucks and other service vehicles using curb space. Vehicles over 22 feet long or over 84 inches high are treated as oversize vehicles for posted Oversize Vehicle Restricted Area parking restrictions. Portable moving or storage containers placed so they obstruct a public street or right-of-way are subject to the applicable right-of-way permit rules.

Vehicle Eligibility Rules

Commercial vehicles parked in a Preferential Parking District do not require a district permit when parked for commercial activities. In a posted Oversize Vehicle Restricted Area, a motor vehicle over 22 feet long or over 84 inches high needs an oversize parking permit to park between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. LADOT's current daily oversize permit fee is $10.

Moving Container Rules

A portable moving or storage container placed so that it obstructs a public street or public right-of-way is subject to the applicable Bureau of Engineering or Bureau of Street Services permit under LAMC Section 62.61 unless exempt.

Parking & Reserved Space

Location Restrictions

Moving vehicles must comply with existing curb and posted restrictions. Red curbs prohibit stopping, standing, and parking. Yellow curbs are for commercial loading; a commercial-plated vehicle actively loading or unloading freight may use a yellow zone for up to 30 minutes. Vehicles without commercial plates may use a yellow zone only to load or unload passengers or baggage for up to 5 minutes. White curbs are passenger-loading zones, green curbs are short-term parking, and blue curbs are accessible parking zones.

Metered Parking Rules

LADOT's current fee page separately identifies meter-space labor costs and meter-loss-recovery charges for street usage. A move-specific flat meter-suspension fee or standard could not be reliably established from the current Temporary No Parking Signs pages.

Temporary No Parking Signs

No parking signs required
Sometimes
Sign posting lead time
For vehicle removal under California Vehicle Code Section 22651(m), when a local authority authorizes highway use for a purpose other than normal traffic or for movement of unusual equipment, articles, or structures, signs giving notice that vehicles may be removed must be erected or placed at least 24 hours before removal.

Sign Posting Rules

Temporary No Parking Signs are handled through LADOT's Special Traffic Control Division and City service-request process. For towing authority under California Vehicle Code Section 22651(m), removal-notice signs must be erected or placed by the local authority pursuant to ordinance.

Enforcement & Street Restrictions

Enforcement / Towing Rules

California Vehicle Code Section 22651(m) authorizes removal of a vehicle when parking would prohibit or interfere with an authorized special use of the highway or movement of unusual equipment, articles, or structures, provided signs giving notice that vehicles may be removed were erected or placed by the local authority at least 24 hours before removal.

Traffic / Street Restrictions

If a move closes a traffic lane or obstructs a public street or right-of-way, LAMC Section 62.61 applies. On Los Angeles street classifications subject to work-hour restrictions, obstruction is prohibited during peak traffic hours Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., unless a Peak Hour Exemption is obtained.

What You Need Before Applying

Requirements

Use lawful curb space and comply with posted parking and colored-curb restrictions. Request LADOT Temporary No Parking Signs when a move needs City-posted curb clearance. If the move closes a traffic lane or otherwise obstructs a public street or public right-of-way, the applicable Bureau of Engineering or Bureau of Street Services permit is required under LAMC Section 62.61 unless an exemption applies. Oversize vehicles parked in a posted Oversize Vehicle Restricted Area between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. require the applicable oversize parking permit.

Exemptions

A move using existing lawful curb or loading space without a City-posted temporary parking restriction and without obstructing the public right-of-way does not use the temporary-sign or right-of-way obstruction permit paths described by the City. LADOT also states that commercial vehicles parked in a Preferential Parking District do not require a district permit while parked for commercial activities; other posted parking restrictions still apply.

Required Documents

LADOT's public Temporary No Parking Signs pages do not publish a fixed household-move document checklist. If a public-right-of-way obstruction permit is required under LAMC Section 62.61, the application must identify the applicant and person responsible for the work or obstruction, identify the street location and area, describe the work or obstruction and why it is necessary, and include subcontractor contact information when applicable.
